Re: TB 3-22-19

Good to hear someone caught specks. Nice kayak also. I am working from home now, so I can slip out during the week.

Sight casting to reds in Meyers late summer last year. Hopefully the water will clear up there soon.

Re: How Old Are You?

I will be 65 next week. Started a HIIT class last October and lost 12 pounds and gained some muscle. Feel great, but those first few weeks the soreness was horrible. Get to fish Louisiana free now, yeah. Since I got the little poling skiff, I have not used the kayak much. Plan to almost totally fly ...

Re: Cabelas 7/8 Weight Back in Stock

Glad I saw this. I was wanting another CGR 7/8 . I finally got a chance to use mine this year for reds and it handled a couple slots OK.

Re: Kayak Launches in Sabine- Louisiana shoreline?

From the launch at Johnson Bayou is a long paddle to the lake. About the only Louisiana shoreline access for a kayak is at the causeway bridge coming from TX. I fish the LA marshes in my small skiff and it is a long ride from everywhere.

Re: What did you tie today?

I love it when you make up a fly and it works. Wanted a fly that floats and stays just under the surface and has swimming action. So I made one with a craft fur tail, Etaz body, small foam head with big eyes. One was brownish (in the pic) and the other was greenish. The Green had too much chartreuse...

Re: First reds on the CGR 7/8wt

Saturday I caught a nearly 28" red on the CGR. Switched the 7'6" one-piece Blackfly Nano and got a 25", two around 20" and a just under 29". Hope the water stays clear through the fall.

Re: First reds on the CGR 7/8wt

My Nano will feel like a broom stick after using the CGR. The popper was on from messing around the bass pond. I will try some other flys next time. I think they would have taken anything.

I will watch for a sale on that rod.

Re: The River may be back

The cypress flats were clear 8/3 and caught several reds. Schools of shad are back and vegetation is growing in the flats. Today 8/8 the water was off-color but not bad. Lady fish were in there so that is a good sign. Only caught one red in the flats. In a vegetation chocked area the water was clear...

Re: The River may be back

We launched next to an ENTERGY sub station that is just outside the gates to the Martin sulfur plant and ship loading. This is back behind the ExxonMobil refinery and south of the old power plant site. Down Gulf States Rd. I usually park close to the RR tracks and not in front of the gate. Walk alon...

First reds on the CGR 7/8wt

I bought the CGR a while back when Cabela's had them on sale for half price. I have only used it in the neighborhood lake for bass. Always wondered if this flimsy rod could handle a red. Well today I landed three and lost a couple. Two were over 25 inches and one was 20 or 21. All were teased with a...

Re: Sabine pass vs bolivar

Sabine area has been strange last couple of months. Not a lot of fish catching. The water in the ship channel was clear yesterday, finally. Besides Sabine Pass there is also Bessie Heights Marsh (across the Neches River from Port Neches), McFaddin Refuge, Keith Lake and its marshes. We have had way ...

I have seen Game Wardens there many times and they appear to not be enforcing fishing from the road or crabbing platforms.

Re: The River may be back

The cypress swamp was muddy. I think the dredging left the flats covered in silt and the wind stirs it up. The bayou looks good. Star Bayou has clear water due to the vegetation. Caught three reds. One near the spoil levee and two in Star.

The River may be back

Made a quick trip to few areas on the Neches and the big -leaf vegetation is back. The water clarity was OK also. Hopefully the the reds are back. I will go later today and tomorrow and report back. Star Bayou was choked solid bank-to-bank. Might be getting back to pre-Ike conditions.

Re: North Sabine

You can look on the TPWD Public Hunting Lands online booklet and see the areas that are in the public hunting lands. If you need the permit, it would be the $12? one for non-hunting activities. I do not if that is enforced for fishing. The regs say that 'shore or bank' fisherman must obtain a permit...

Re: Hauling Kayak Long distance

Tie it down so it doesn't slide back or size-to-side. Do not use too much pressure. Excessive pressure points cause deformation or cracks. Bed extenders are great and handy for hauling other long items.

Snook in the surf

On the Florida coast anyway. Staying a few days in Vero Beach. Snook are starting to run in the surf. Awesome to see them busting into bait and some completely clearing the water. I was using a crank bait and snagged a pilchard then threw both out in 20 seconds had a snook. Great to see Spanish mack...

Re: What did you tie today?

My wife wanted to go back to Vero Beach, FL. I read snook are in the surf this time of year. I tied some bucktail on jig heads for spinning and tied three Schminnows. May not be calm enough for fly fishing. They say white is the go to color.

Re: Sea Rim Trip Advice

It is a about a mile paddle back to Fence Lake. The southeast side of Fence has some shallow flats that may be good for sight casting. You can also drive west to Clam Lake which is in the McFaddin Refuge. South end of Clam Lake can be good for reds. You can put in at the bridge over Salt Bayou and p...

Re: Broke in the Marshfly Nano

My Nano is 8/9 wt. I caught a red about the same size on my 7-6 spinning rod. Then picked up the Nano and in a couple of minutes caught that one. The Nano seemed to have more horsepower. All my fly rods from 70's and 80's were 7-6 to 8-0. My Max was 7wt. The shorter rods fit in the yak and skiff bet...

We went. Late start and got hammered by the east wind. Before the rain I was doing good to make a 30 foot cast into that wind. No bites and will try again.

Don't feel bad. Some of guides are not doing well either. I managed 4 reds in the Sabine Refuge the same day. Did not get a strike in the lake and bait was everywhere.

Broke in the Marshfly Nano

I was fishing the Sabine Wildlife Refuge. Found some clear water and finally caught a red on my 7'6" Marshfly Nano. It was moving away from the front of the skiff but not spooked enough to ignore the fly. It ran 40 feet in two seconds and I was glad the line was not wrapped around the rod butt ...
