Re: Rollover Pass

I was down there this weekend. Its getting filled in fast almost to flat land both sides. Has anyone noticed any changes to the nearby inshore waters, tidal movement, water clarity, etc?

Re: Lost Hobie Mirage Drive

That is a tough break. I bought my PA14 used. The prior owner was smarter than I would have been. He equipped my mirage drive with a lanyard to attach to the boat. The male strap clip stays with the lanyard/drive. The female clip is on a short loop attached to the rail. I've never tipped but its eas...

Re: Paddle vs Pedal

North of age 60 myself. Two positive things: 1. Seat comfort. Look at the two kayaks posted above. Consider which seat you would rather sit in for hours. The Hobie Advantage seat is awesome. 2. Stability. The Hobie Pro Angler or Outback are very stable. I bought my PA14 like new from a bass fisherma...

Louis Dressing

If you've ever been in the Western US you may have noticed that almost every seafood restaurant offers a Shrimp Louis or Crab Louis salad. This recipe for the famous Louis Dressing is pretty simple and it is delicious.

Re: Made a Light Rig when Hauling My Kayak in the Bed of a Truck

Nice! The idea about using a bicycle tail light is genius. I have a couple of those already that can flash red or stay on. In fact I have a spare in my truck already. It can strap onto the stern handle just like the bike seat tube. (The new generation of lights have internal batteries that charge an...

Re: Made a Light Rig when Hauling My Kayak in the Bed of a Truck

Those are great. I used my Harbor Freight Tailgate Extender one time in daylight when I picked up my PA14 from the guy who sold it to me north of Austin, and hauled it one-way to the coast where it lives. If time allowed I would use it again to evacuate for a hurricane. I was a little nervous at fir...

Re: New Hobie mirage drive for 2020

I really agree on everyone's points about the PA14. It definitely is not a one man easy launch watercraft. I keep mine in a boat house sling lift that used to hold my motorboat so weight is not an issue. On the other hand stability is a huge issue and the PA14 is the gold standard for that. I just t...

Re: New Hobie mirage drive for 2020

I agree. Its a matter of how I fish now that I'm north of 65. And, I went straight from single end paddling an Old Town canoe to the Mirage drive bypassing double end paddling. But I observe regular kayaks nearby me when I'm fishing and its not for me. If I had money to burn I would buy a Hobie Revo...

One way to re-board a kayak in deep water.

One day I tried to re enter my Hobie PA14 while safely at the dock. Good to practice this at least once, right in case you fall over? I found I am too old and weak in the upper body to just grab at the stern and drag my heavy self back in. But while in the water, I noticed the half inch mooring line...

Re: New Hobie mirage drive for 2020

In as nutshell, paddling and fishing are incompatible in my view. I have too much else to do with my hands...cast, land fish, drink coffee, drink beer. I often troll suspending lures like the Mirrolure Catch 2000 or pitch a Top Dog. It only takes one hand to quickly adjust the rudder lever every now...

Re: New Hobie mirage drive for 2020

1. The drive hole is not the same for this 2020 360 system. Also there is a special lever and connection on gunnel for the 360 feature. Not an upgrade for existing Hobies. 2. I haven't had any issues and I too am a regular bicyclist with strong legs. It is important to adjust the pedals so you don't...

Re: New Hobie mirage drive for 2020

The video is amazing. Does the new system even have a rudder? Looks like you don't need one anymore with this 360 system. And the bump hinged pivot blades are also a game changer if you can really just bang over obstructions. All Hobie products seem pricey until you own and use them. This company co...

Re: new Hobie bimini shade

Well I tested it this weekend. It worked very well especially mid morning and mid afternoon. Just like a t-top on a motor boat it let the breeze get to you and kept the sun off of you. Those high sun times were enjoyable when before I would not go out due to the heat. The front pole of course made c...

new Hobie bimini shade

https://www.hobie.com/accessories/bimini/ I just bought one for my Hobie PA14. As with all Hobie accessories, it is not cheap, but IMO way better than aftermarket substitutes. It is beautiful canvas on blue anodized metal poles. Bungee jointed like tent poles. Main pole fits in front hole in most Ho...

Stupid simple Speckled Trout fillet recipe

This is so easy its criminal. Buy a box of chicken Rice a Roni. You also need butter per the box. Prepare in a large skillet with cover per the recipe on the box. But...about 10 minutes from end of rice being cooked down, just lay fillets on top of the semi-cooked rice, sprinkle them with whatever s...
