Re: PINS August 1st-6th driving condition question

From my experience going down to PINS: The most important thing is timing your drive at low tide. You will be able to essentially drive on pavement that is slightly leaning. You will be able to avoid the dry sand completely unless you have to go around someone parked in your way. You may even be tem...

Re: New tip for offshore kayak anglers

Swimming the kayak in from behind is effective. I've seen it done and know a couple of guys that do it a lot with no issues. Only thing I worry about is when a big wave hits the kayak hard enough to knock it out of your hands then you're swimming. Yes u gotta hang on to that kayak for sure. The old...

New tip for offshore kayak anglers

I relocated to the Pensacola FL area a few months ago and have gone fishing from my hobie outback about a dozen times. I learned a new trick from some of the guys here for reentry into the surf zone that significantly reduces (if not virtually eliminates) the chances of suffering a turtling/yard sal...

Re: Self-powered live well for kayak (hobie in particular)

Thanks for your post Impulse. I reran the calcs with Bernoulli's equation and got your 1.6875". No bueno. Good thing I posted here and got feedback. Must've messed up unit conversions the first time around. I got a reasonable order of magnitude then so I just figured we were all good lol. I mig...

Re: Self-powered live well for kayak (hobie in particular)

Kirk B. - This was my original plan. But after seeing on youtube how to make a cheap and easy low-pressure DIY check valve, I'm just gonna go ahead and prototype the completed product. The check valve is just some PVC parts, a gasket, and an acrylic ball that is "trapped" in a little cage ...

Re: Self-powered live well for kayak (hobie in particular)

mwatson71: I agree. I still lurk on this board even though I no longer live in the area. Lots of bright minds here and that's why I made the effort to post here! fishtolive: Thanks for the suggestion. I never heard of this until you mentioned it and I did some research. It's a very cool concept. If ...

Self-powered live well for kayak (hobie in particular)

Since we are in the quiet BTB season here, I was wondering if some of you guys could help me out with an idea I wanted to try putting together for my Hobie Outback. I'm prepared to prototype a live well for the back compartment of my Outback that would work sufficiently with a 2 knot forward motion....

Re: Oops

hey guys. I used to live in the Houston area and posted a little back in the day about fishing my hobie outback at the Matty rig and other inshore areas. I've since moved from the area and am fishing elsewhere. I have a HERO 5 that I bought (actually was inspired by Prof. Salt) so that I could make ...

Re: Matagorda rigs

Absolutely. When I lived in Houston this was my go-to spot. The only live/dead bait I used there was either dead ribbonfish on a stinger or whatever I caught with a sabiki. These would be good for kings and other pelagics if they were around that day. From your description of the water clarity I wou...

Re: Matagorda rigs

With a Hobie with mirage drive, you could cover that distance in about 30 minutes (at about 4mph) without "busting your ass" so to speak. Usually people will troll on the way there so that'll slow them down. I imagine good kayakers with good paddle kayaks could move faster if they wanted to

Re: Matagorda rigs

That is a great rig. I like it cause of the pelagics and also you get a ton of "brownwater" species there as well. I would troll around for the pelagics and jig at the rig for reds and specks. Good thing with a kayak with pedals is you can follow the fish around the rig if thats where it g...

Do any of you guys use these? I'm thinking of investing in one for BTB but would like to hear reviews from the experts (if you got em) https://www.amazon.com/Ahi-USA-Sabiki-Stick-Bait/dp/B07DS1NHLJ Really looking if there's any type of problems with them or if they're just not as convenient as this ...

Re: Matagorda this weekend!

This time of year the 2 mile Matty rig should easily have kings. Especially if the super clear water in the Corpus area has any effect on the water near Matagorda. I suggest wire leadering everything since the smacks will be thick and going after anything shiny. If you have pedal drive bring some he...

Re: Matagorda catching trip 9/16/2017

This rig was my go-to BTB when I lived in Houston. The Surfside rig is closer to drive to from Houston but it ends up being a longer trip cause of the water commute. The other noteworthy mention is that the Surfside rig gets a lot of boat traffic since its the first stop for boaters who leave the Su...

Re: Doable BTB or no?

For me personally it would depend on the wind direction. Where I go btb around Matagorda, those conditions with an onshore wind would make a mess of the surfzone and doable but in my opinion unpleasant fishing past the surf zone. If thats an offshore wind I would go btb. The surf in made neat and pr...

Re: Matagorda Rigs Report

When I fish the rigs, and particularly this one, I typically do 1 of 2 things. I either troll large circles around the rig and get jacks, kings, and (hopefully this weekend for the first time), cobia. Ill use big topwaters, bombers, and ribbonfish. I've never had an issue losing gear to spanish mack...

Re: Any Where On Coast - At All

BTB conditions look dismal and treacherous for those days. If you want to go fishing I suggest going in the bay along a shoreline that'll dampen the wind.

Matagorda BTB June 19th

Feesh! and I met up to go to the Matagorda rig. We were really pumped needless to say. As we pull up onto the beach and see the chocolate milkshake washing machine that calls itself a surfzone we got a little worried. The winds were low as forecasted and the water looked fine past the breakers. We m...

Re: Idea trolling from new Hobies

The new reverse Mirage drives are definitely cool. I can see the hovering you described being the only real practical use for them. I have the previous model hobie outback and I use the mirage drive to hover (forwards) against current/wind at at rig when im knife jigging or under the causeway lights...

Matagorda rig this saturday May 6th

Im planning on beach launching and fishing around the Matty rig this Saturday. Ive been there a bunch of times and all were successful (except for a trip in january). Ive never been at this rig at this time of year tho. But I expect smacks and jacks to be around along with kings hopefully. I'd love ...

Also, cellphone reception there works for my verizon workphone but not for my sprint personal phone.

My btb buddy left town for a new job so if anyone wants to hit up this rig send me a PM. I got laid off so I am down and ready to go whenever the swell and surf conditions get good

Re: New to BTB fishing, Matagorda

mpg pretty much covered it. The matty rig is my go-to rig (Im from the Houston area). Its close and everytime I went its full of action. Head south on road 2031 and take a left on Beach road. Once youre on the beach take a left and drive 5 miles to make your water commute as short as possible. Beach...
