Re: Surfside Trip Wed Aug 12th or Fri the 14th

I've launched from Quintana beach. On a calm day without surf it's easier and with less paddling if you are targeting the 5 mile rig. A slight limitation is that right now quintana beach seems to open at 8am - Personally I think coastguard boat ramp is a bit safer for leaving your vehicle unattended...

Re: 6-14-20 Kayak Surfside BTB (REPORT)

Enjoyed reading the report! I was fishing from the jetty and saw some of you coming in. In the past couple years I haven't heard too many kings being caught at surfside jetty nearshore. But they seemed to have come this way this year again. By the way, how are lures doing with kings compared to ribb...

Re: Anchor trolley

Thanks Ron! ... I've been using the stainless steel anchor pulley: 8$ for 2. Not as refined as Ron's setup but it worked adequately for me. https://www.amazon.com/YYST-Stainless-Pulley-Anchor-Trolley/dp/B010VBCE8I/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=kayak+pulley+anchor&qid=1563551590&s=sporting-goods&sr...

Re: Anchor trolly.

So much good knowledge here!! I've been using para-cord 550 as anchor trolley line and been wanting to find a better replacement cord. The main drawback of para-cord is its low abrasion resistance. I have had multiple wears and breaks on the outer casing of line where I had to repair it with wrappin...

Re: Penn clash vs Daiwa bg

I used to see slammer III sold at 180$ on one website... The slammer III has been tested by many boat tuna fishermen and kayak BTB fishermen and they seem to agree that this reel will hold with heavy fish and is pretty saltwater safe with minimal maitainance- you won't need to tear it down after eac...

Re: Penn clash vs Daiwa bg

For BTB I think the waterproofing is probably the most important thing, plus the power to handle bigger fish. I actually recommend shimano's spheros SW 6000, which is good in both departments. It's fully sealed and has enough power to handle kings or cobias. They have 5000 size option but it's the s...

I would have given up early at the near rigs. Way to persevere to find fish! And that surf back to shore looked good fun!

The rods of course will be leashed during fishing

I use the same type of leash for my paddle and rods. I tried several types and like these the most.

Rigging of the original Scupper kayak for BTB fishing

Pre-rigging: bare bone kayak. It comes with a seat but I think I'll use the kayak without it. I bought this yak about a month ago from craigslist for 200$ which I think is an awesome deal. Based on its hull identification number (HIN), it's made in 1987 and it's the first production year of the Scup...

Re: Surfside 6/1

Yep it's a nice window of 3 days.
I might go Sunday. If I do get out I'll be on a papaya yellow scupper kayak and will be launching on the surfside beach near the jetty.

Re: Carrying a Kayak on a Passenger Car

I still think carrying on the roof top is the way to go, with either thule racks or soft foam kayak loaders. To avoid damaging the paint, I was thinking you could apply vinyl wrap or vinyl decal kind of material on the top, or just strips of that material where kayak or rack would be in contact. The...

Re: Dashboard bar on Kestrel

Ron, I saw the Caribbean 14 yak you mentioned - it is a nice one. I once almost pulled the trigger on a hurricane skimmer 140 which I think has a similar ABS hull. Yep I think Caribbean 14 should be fast and nicely stiff. For now though, I'll have to settle with the original scupper from ocean kayak...

Re: Dashboard bar on Kestrel

I am learning a lot from your rigging . Beautiful, neat, and thorough rigging. Also the Kestrel 140 SOT has been one of my dream SOT kayak. 24'' wide, 14' long, super light Kevlar material, extremely fast for SOT, super fishable too. It's just near impossible nowadays to find a used one. I was wonde...

Good conditions indeed. Even the tide is cooperating with morning outgoing tide and afternoon little tidal movement until 5pm. I might go as well and if I do will be launching from surfside beach near the jetty.

Re: Have Kings arrived at Corpus Christi yet?

I don't think Kings are at Surfside yet - at least not at the jetties.
Jacks are here though so it would still be ton of fun if you can get into a mixture of spanish mackerel and jacks.

Man this is a hardcore btb yak for a hardcore btb kayak fisherman.
Now paddling the distance will be a lot quicker and funner.
I wish ACK would start dealing stealth kayaks here.

Yeah, I'll be waiting for Prof's report- Not sure if I'll be able to make the Bob Hall group gathering. I'm looking to hit the Mayan rigs when a good weather window shows up in May.

Have Kings arrived at Corpus Christi yet?

Haven't seen any posts about the Kings anywhere. It seems the water temp has risen to 68F based on NOAA site. And spanish mackerels are already being caught in Galveston/freeport. When do you guys normally start the King season? I am located in Houston and have been planning to go to the Corpus Chri...

Re: Hawaiian (Kage) Spear Gaff

These look very nice and solid. Did the shovel handles come with the metal sleeve (ferrule)? I've been looking for these. A while ago, I made a similar gaff but couldn't find wooden handles with ferrules. I ended up using round dowel which is likely not as strong as the handle wood. I used a copper ...
