Re: What is a jerk shad supposed to mimic?
Uh, ok. That does hold true now that you put it like that, but should I use it when shrimp are active or when baitfish are. That's a really good question. If someone could fish it one day when they have identified the main bait as shrimp , then fish it another day when shrimp seem absent and little...

Re: Inquiry on Salt Lake in Brazoria
The gate to the park is opened early each day.
There are kayakers and bank fisherpeople at the launch area most days.
On the right day and spot in that two lake and associated cuts system, it can be great, like many places. There are dead days there also, like most places.

Maintaining our launch sites and rights to access
I've mentioned this just a couple times over the course of 5 or 6 years. I keep a couple heavy duty trash bags in my truck behind the back seat, the black or brown Hefty 30 gal type bags, and easily pick up a bags worth of garbage when a kayak launch site is trashed. I also always have gloves and ha...

Re: Google Earth Pro Tips & Tricks: Part 2 - Coastal Data
I like so many others, have spent countless hours on GE, NOAA pages, and many others. I thought I was well schooled in GE, but most of this post #2 was new to me. I'd like a solunar location layer with location links - that would be nice. Thank you and I look forward to the next few tips and tricks ...
Jigheads
Lost a big redfish yesterday. Not all hooks/jigs are created equal. I will rid myself of the thinner gauge jigs at this point. I know two brands that are thicker and I assume stronger.

https://tacklehut.com/ I don't work for them, don't get recognition from them, don't get anything from them except perfectly cleaned and lubed reels within 2-3 days, for cheaper and faster turnaround than all the other shops or people claiming to service reels. On the north side of Houston - not co...

Re: Bolivar Flats
AustinW, I have never been there, but after a quick look at GoogleEarth and using the time toolbar, it looks like from the pilings on over toward the jetty there should be a few sand bars. Check out googleearth and go back in time using the time toolbar. I think that will answer some of your questio...

Re: Jamaica beach Shell island
In google earth, look to the west of Jamaica Beach, and north of Bird Island Cove. If you need GPS coordinates, here you go: 29°11'22.44"N 95° 0'58.29"W Plug these in to any GPS app or system. You aren't wading there from Jamaica Beach, sorry. You could kayak there, anchor up, then wade pe...
Re: Diverse
That is a diverse trio. In principal it makes perfect sense, but I haven't seen that in the Galveston or Freeport areas. I could do without the ray, and the only time I caught bass and a red in proximity to each other was near Lafitte, La. You will remember that expedition - glad you posted.

Can kayak be launched from north end of Sheldon?
29°52'55.61"N 95°11'9.37"W Anyone ever launched or tried to launch from here? Can it be done, or worth the effort? I am looking for a freshwater place or two to try after a few years of occasional marsh fishing for redfish. Looking for places within an hour from central Houston. Also think...

Re: Request for saltwater kayak recommendations
I'd suggest buying used to get more for the money and if you want to move to something else next season, then subtract $100 and sell it. Ocean Trident/Prowlers are nice all-round kayaks. Most Ocean, Wilderness, Viking, or Jackson kayaks can do you fine so long as you follow above guidelines on wide/...

Re: New to Saltwater- how to read water levels?
In my experience, 2.0 and higher above MLLW, water is into the cordgrass or shoreline vegetation. 2.0 covers all living oyster reefs that I’ve come across. Something around 3.5 to 4.0 puts water on streets in the lowest neighborhoods in Surfside. Levels between 1.5 and 2.0, water is mostly out of t...

Speaking only for myself, I have no problem with a post that isn't from a kayak so long as it is relevant to those of us in kayaks. I like that you pointed out it is accessible and where the launch is...to relate it to kayak fishing. I've never been down that way, but glad you posted up. A still pho...

Re: Hangin’ with the Fishes—2018 flog
So the Black Bass rod with reel is equiv to a little over $400 today. Well, throw a decent Shimano or Abu Garcia on a Castaway or Falcon rod and you're in the neighborhood. Seems reasonable for a good rig of the time. Hey I need to get one of those Chubb rods Chubs, I was wondering if you'd speak up...

Someday Karst, I want to learn to throw a fly. Until I get more consistent with my conventional gear though, it seems it would be just one more challenge and difficulty when I already have no claim to real expertise. Marsh Lake Nov 24
Went to one of the substantial marsh lakes I have a love-hate relationship with. I've been blown off the lake with chop in high winds, skunked, and had great days on this lake. Saturday the wind was almost non-existent, the drains were flowing in to the lake on outgoing tide through my fishing time....

Re: Wader questions
I'll second the Simms, Patagonia, Orvis line if you have a few hundred bucks to drop for a pair that should last for years. My Patagonia's, got at a great discount a few years ago, are lasting great. BUT, who knows anything about the local Gulf Coast Waders product? http://www.gulfcoastwaders.com/ma...

Geeking out on NOAA tide drop
The major tide drop finally happened the last day or so. dropped-tides.JPG Looks like about 4 feet total from high tide late Sun night to low tide Tuesday morning. For cold weather kayakers willing to find the guts and holes today or tomorrow, I'm sure there's fish piled up in the holes. I searched ...

Last year I got a pair of Patagonia Rio Gallegos with the zip front Now that is something worth paying for! And I like the Patagonia quality. I should also correct my original statement that cheap waders aren't worth having. They actually served a great purpose for my kids for a season or two and p...

Re: Breathable waders for wide feet?
We (me and my two boys) have had cheap waders and they are not worth having in my opinion. Find Simms or Patagonia on sale, cough up the money if you can, and you're set for years. Like a lightweight paddle, once you get a really good one, it will feel like money well spent. Call it an early Christm...
