Am headed to Rockport tomorrow and will fish the area through Sunday morning. No clue if it will be worth a damn or not, we'll see. If anyone wants to fish together, hit me up.

Re: Son is soon to be 10, time for his own kayak?
Should have mentioned in my post, my son at 7 is not ready for saltwater/wind. I take the kids out in small water around Austin. Figure no need to even consider saltwater for my son until he's good enough to paddle around with me untethered at Cypress Creek Lake or something. Even then I would be ve...

Re: Son is soon to be 10, time for his own kayak?
I have a Heritage angler 10' . Not a lot of storage and tough to stand in, but it paddles very nicely. I am 6,1 and 145 lbs, its enough space for me. I can paddle 7 miles easy if the wind is around 12 mphs. Your kid can handle it. Take him in protected water for the first couple of times till he ge...

Re: Minimalist coastal camping from a kayak
Some buddies and I are starting to think about this for the fall. The goal would be to camp on the coast for 3 days and 2 nights primitively, setting out with only what we could carry on our 3-4 kayaks. I'm pretty sure we aren't the only guys to have thought of this, so I figured I'd see what other...

Re: What should I have done?
And maybe I need to start packing a fly rod for when I (currently pretty rarely) find myself in a situation for sight fishing. I'm already pretty much at the limit of smallness as to what I can cast with conventional tackle.

Re: What should I have done?
Thanks for the sympathy and advice, gives me some things to try next time. I find it interesting how much of the specific advice is from fly fishermen. I'm very experienced in freshwater fly fishing and have been successful catching very selective trout on spring creeks. Sounds like the advice is so...

What should I have done?
A couple of weekends back I was fishing some flats near Aransas Pass and ran into a great but frustrating situation. Water was a foot, foot-and-a-half deep and clear. I picked up one nice red on a topwater, stopped my drift and landed him. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160327/41f82ec33dc915a4b22...

Sounds like a cant-lose event. Thanks for the responses. May be difficult for me to get out there in April, but I'll definitely try to make one of them this year.

Thanks for the bivy suggestion. That's probably where we'll gravitate towards. It didn't seem clear from the product description, though, if those are rainproof. Do you have firsthand experience?

Re: Minimalist coastal camping from a kayak
Thanks, Earl, awesome advice. I've been intrigued by the Port O'Connor area, haven't fished it yet. We may have to target that. Not sure I'm willing to chance us being able to find water. Maybe that will be a skill I'll try to develop while having a safety net of some gallons stuck in the yak hull.

Re: Yakin' tunes
goredho, I clicked your Spotify link. I don't have an account so I only saw four bands listed: Steve Miller Band, The Allman Brothers, Foghat and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Made me smile. Believe it or not, the first three bands I ever saw (70's) were (in order): The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Fogha...

Yeah, my library is a work in progress. Those glasses look pretty sweet, let me know how they work. I am awful with glasses. No pair has lasted me more than 2 months before I lost em or broke em. So I have a $20 budget that I stick to for glasses. Never thought I'd see something with those features ...

Re: TROLLING MOTORS ON KAYAKS
Would recommend a used kayak to start. Was the best decision I made when I started 4 years ago as I have made lots of mistakes that have left it looking like a chupacabra with mange. Had I done all this with a shiny new kayak, I'd have made myself sick. Plus, I got a better sled for the money I want...
