One more parade

I got a bit of a late start, considering how far I needed to paddle, but before daylight I hit the river and headed towards Nueces Bay. Three miles down, I was able to round the corner and head back towards the marsh. With yesterday's strong NW winds the back bay had dumped nicely, and the daylight ...

Bulls on Parade

In the flats I target exposed redfish, and usually pass up the deeper ones just because the shallow visible ones make me happy. I don't mind leaving schools alone in deeper water for other people to play with - but those exposed ones get my blood pumping because it's an active stalk on a wary fish. ...

Re: I sure hope this turns out the way it seems

*Update: I did go ahead and take the reel to Roy's for a good cleaning. They changed out the line roller bearing but otherwise just cleaned it and the reel was given a clean bill of health. This coming year I will add a 1000 size reel for those light lures and extra spooky fish. Most of my life I ju...

These tides are making a lot of us look to new areas. Congrats on finding some good eats out there!

I sure hope this turns out the way it seems

I have worked as an ambassador for Roy's Bait and Tackle for several years, and one of my self-appointed missions has been to try out several models of spinning reels so I can offer customers real-world experience without any pressure. I use them hard and often, and take care of them the best I can ...

I have not noticed anything worrisome in the Corpus area. It got cold but not for long, and I didn't see a major dump here either.

Re: Prickly Pear Syrup

I enjoyed a glass of Prickly Pear fruit juice last night at dinner. It's surprisingly smooth and tasty with a little sugar, and I can see a bunch of "tuna" collecting trips ahead this year.

December was pretty nice

I've been lazy about posting during the holidays, but now that I'm back to work I guess I should dump some results. I've been out of touch for a few weeks, but I was fishing pretty consistently. Most days I waded for trout around drainages on the outgoing tide, but I worked some deeper flats too to ...

And it was enough on both accounts. Today I’m thinking about a rematch - I can’t see them laying down two nights in a row during a good tidal drop.

Ten miles and just one cast

This afternoon I went to the Nueces delta marsh to put in a few miles and look for reds. The tide was dropping out and according to the solunar chart there would be a major feed from 3:30 - 5:00. I knew the spots that should hold fish, but every place I checked had zero feeding activity. I found qui...

Re: Live look at MP rigs and surf conditions

Glenn, what type of dry bag do you use? I’m sick of wasting money on Amazon dry bags that don’t work.. Hopefully , budget friendly. Thanks Sorry to mini hijack your post! I have dry hatches that serve that purpose on the Stealth. One between me and the main hatch is designed as a livewell, but I pl...

Great one hour bite

Last night I looked at the forecast ...and then at the tide chart. I had a hunch and decided to text the boss and my admin and let them know I would be late coming to the office today. I woke at 4:15 and headed for a grass flat I know well but don't fish often. It has the structures that work well w...

On the board!

I headed to the property to hunt for the first time this season on Saturday. I knew deer would be around, but had no idea what I would find. Historically someone in the family gets a big buck during the Thanksgiving holidays, and nobody had hunted this year so I hoped to shoulder that burden. ...

‘‘Twas time to just be a Viking

Not much keeps me from pursuing fish if they’re in the shallows, and this mornings cool rain and winds failed to put a damper on the festivities. I looked at conditions and decided to launch late, so at 8:30 I hit the water and began the search during the falling tide. I was hoping that the tidal mo...

My son wanted to make jelly out of them this year, so we picked and processed a few batches. It takes a double dose of pectin to get the liquid to gel correctly, but it sure is tasty stuff!

A tough morning that turned out anyway

Saturday was clear and high pressure, but I had a chance to paddle so I was out looking for reds as it got light. Four miles from my truck it began to get light and I was in a good area watching carefully. As I passed a cul-de-sac there was a big movement back towards the end of it that caught my at...

Trick or Treat on the water

I don't fish very often (most of what I do is more like hunting with a rod and reel) but last night I dressed up in some waders and went fishing, looking for treats. I found a bunch along a drop-off on the edge of a grass flat, but only kept a few. One trout that appeared to be between 26 and 28&quo...

Re: Rough morning for the redfish

Thanks for the response Dr. Salt. If anyone has a suggestion I'd love to hear it. I think some fly casters strip the line over the side of the kayak to keep it from tagling in the boat but I'm not sure I am that coordinated.... Stripping line outside the boat can offer its own challenges. Line can ...

Re: Rough morning for the redfish

The green towel just covers the straps and anything else that could tangle the fly line. My idea is to strip only what I’ll cast and keep it on that green towel so it can cast smoothly.if you are using the pedal drive your answer would need to be somewhat different, but I’m not sure what would work ...

Thanks, and you are correct about training. I hit the gym 3-4 hours a week and work core specifically along with overall strength, then paddle every time I have a chance to keep in paddling shape. I feel better now than when I was in my 20s, and although I do get tired, the soreness is limited to my...

Rough morning for the redfish

Saturday morning I paddled all through the Nueces delta looking for fish, and they were working shorelines according to plan. I managed sixteen of them throughout the morning, including five fish on my way back to the truck that were all between 24 and 26 inches. With the Stealth kayak the miles tic...

Grumble grumble... stupid blue skies

I’m not a fan of fishing or hunting on these bluebird days. Yes the sky is pretty, but I just want to sleep …much like the deer and fish. Aside from the annoying blue sky, today had all the other indicators of a great dropping tide afternoon bite, so I went despite the pretty conditions. For once, t...
