Re: Surfside 5th6th7th Post Fishing Report
If you like catching 18-24" fish you would have been happy with our weekend. Yaknaround and I went to the platform at Surfside Friday. There was no bait activity and no pelagics or bull reds either. There were a few small sharks there but the bite was slow. Ryans' fishfinder showed lots of bait...

Re: saturday or sunday surfside
Zovath, Last 2 times out I've seen plenty of bait movement just beyond the breaking waves but haven't tried it that close to shore. I'm thinking there was Spanish Mackerel working the area. I think it is between Access roads 4 and 5. You can see the platform offshore so we'll be as close to there as...

Several bait camps as you approach the jetties. Been told the one under the bridge?? sells fresh instead of frozen and is cheaper as well. Not sure of price.

Re: Has anyone fished the 7.5 Fathom Reef?
A little dot on Google Earth told me. Check the Explore the ocean option under ocean on the bottom left screen of GE. The dot is about 4 miles south of the pass and 3 miles out on GE. Clicking on this dot gave me the information quoted above. Have dangerously assumed the dot is in the actual positio...

Has anyone fished the 7.5 Fathom Reef?
It is located 3.2 miles from the sand at Port Mansfield, certainly doable from a kayak. Here is a brief note on the reef: "During the last ice age when the sea level was 100m lower, the 7.5 Fathom Reef substructure was a freshwater lake. Mats of tube-building worms, sponges, ascidians, hydroids...

Hey Adame,
You ought to check out the 7.5 Fathom Reef and the artificial reef at Port Mansfield. The 7.5 fathom reef was created in the ice age and is reported to hold red snapper. It is just over 3 miles from shore while the artificial reef is about 7 miles from shore.

x3 as mentioned above.. plus you might also want to "lighten the load" if you have items stored inside your yak then that causes more weight. plus these handles normally wear out due to the UV hitting them. Coat them with some UV protectant the same you use on your yak to make them last a...

Re: Surfside 5th6th7th
I've been BTB a few times, twice in a rental of the kayak I purchased (handles well and I'm comfortable making it through the surf). I have spent some time on freshwater getting comfortable in my yak, and I know I have the gear needed to catch bull reds in the surf (previous BTB @ HI). This will be...

I'm planning on going BTB Saturday evening and/or Sunday morning. Not ready for a rig trip yet. Still deciding between HI and jetty at Surfside. If you're in the area Saturday stop by and give us a report. We'll be camping on the beach between BA 4 & 5 in front of the platform. If you change yo...

If nothing else it looked like a nice day to get out on the water. I really like the grey kayak set up. Can I get more pics of it. How does she handle in the water. How did the shark turn out. You've got good eyes Shadow Fox. That's a Hobie Adventure Island. Search for Living Waters or Adame's vide...

Just got my first kayak (malibu stealth 12) a few weeks ago and its time to go BTB (she handles great in the neighborhood creeks and lakes). I was planning to hit the surf this weekend too and would like to meet up with the group. I'll be fishing Saturday. Can you let me know where y'all will be lo...

Re: First Time BTB Questions
Just read through some of the material above. Good stuff. One thing that was mentioned was a practice trip through the surf first. I doubt you need to make a special trip to the beach to practice surf entries. The OK drifter is very stable, I use one. On the day of your first trip fishing, make prac...

Re: First Time BTB Questions
The trolley system is not required, but you do need an anchoring point on your kayak within reach but toward the back. Dangerous to be square to the current. Also you want to face where your lines will be; i.e. down current. I really like having the trolley system for bay fishing as I can turn the y...

Not in Jones Lake. It was a black drum. You can see them rooting around in the shallows in the bay area just behind Rollover Pass. Black drum and large sheepshead were there in numbers. Couldn't get them to take a bait. Could get really close to them though. Next time I want to take some pictures in...

Re: No substitute for experience
Good story, and so true. That's what I tell myself when I pull out my beat up but trusty Penn reels and cheap spinning reels that sound like its grinding on sandpaper despite its last cleaning. But, I rarely get skunked anymore on live or dead bait. Getting better with artificials too. Long way to go.

Haha. That's right. And if they are unable to do it properly, or they flunk out, we cut off their middle two fingers and send them down the road.jaguarpaw wrote:I think it's something guys dressed in maroon do.Roofish wrote:Ok here's a stupid question, but what exactly is gigging?

Re: Broken Side Handle
Buy new handles from Academy $12. Drill out the old rivets and install with stainless steel bolts and nuts (supplied with the handle, I think). If you can't reach the inside of the kayak at that location will have to use rivets to install. Not that big of a job really. Good luck.
