Re: Current fish patterns
Early March has always been slow for me. I fish February with dead shrimp on the bottom for sheepsheads and drum and continue this behavior well into March until I either tire of catching big hardheads or see reds chasing glass minnows in the marshes, both of which should happen pretty soon now, as ...

Re: Kayaking in the Fog!!
Yeah, I've had to cross the ICW in the fog a few times -- very disconcerting. I get about halfway, loose sight of both banks, and I hear a barge motor chugging in the distance but can't tell from which direction it's coming. I can't even tell if I'm still headed toward the other bank or if I've turn...

Re: Fishing line
For me, fishing is about what's fun, not about what's best. I want an enjoyable outing. I only want one fish for dinner, which is pretty easy to do if I'm allowed to do it my way. If I catch more, back they go. Choosing line might be different for those who are competitive or want a bigger stringer....

Re: Where to park to fish Pelican Island?
Do they let you launch a kayak in Seawolf Park? I know it's a bit of a paddle to the other side of Pelican Island from there. I paddled from Galveston Yacht Basin all the way around Pelican Island one day. I won't ever cross the channel again with the boat and ship traffic I had to deal with, but th...

Re: Bleeding your catch?
A lot depends upon personal taste. Try it both ways and see if it makes a difference. I'm one of the few people who like the dark meat next to the skin. It's a stronger, gamier flavor some dislike, others find interesting. The same is true for jalapenos. Some relish the heat, others can't understand...

Re: Spring Flounder Run
It is my understanding, listening to marine biologists and crusty-old fisherman, the Fall flounder run is nothing more than a frantic breeding event. Flounder are actually cold-hearty fish and, as soon as the offshore orgy is complete, late December through early January, the flounder begin to trick...

Re: How do you fish brown water?
The time of the year was more the fault of your slow bite rather than the water color. I fish the Upper Texas Coast where opaque backwaters are common. Predatory fish have lateral lines, and they can (see) sound better than you think. It's not uncommon for me to drop a spook on the surface of the wa...

Re: Coming back to Kayak Fishing
There are a lot more kayak choices for bigger guys today than ten years ago. Manufacturer's are even making paddleboards now for bigger guys, such as Live's L2 Fish, and the Dragonfly 13'6. The seats available today, and the slide tracks, are the biggest improvements in my opinion. But a lot more pe...

Curious if anyone has fished with this rod and can offer an opinion. I'm thinking of pairing a 7'6", Med Hvy with a 4000 sized reel.

Re: Kayak blue cats
Blues are aggressive catfish. A couple of years ago, I was trolling Rat-L-Traps behind my Hobie AI at Sam Rayburn in open water. It was a fast troll speed under sail. I started hanging one blue cat after another. Most were 2lb to 3lb fish. Unfortunately, I lost four Rat-L-Traps because my line would...

Nice video. At first I thought you were leaving Hobie for another brand. Nice upgrade, that Outback 2019. Hobie continues to make interesting improvements to their line of kayaks. In case the folks at Hobie are watching, how about designing a smaller Trimaran based on the Revolution 13 hull? Smaller...

Re: Making galvestons water clearer/ blue
Clear Creek and Clear Lake were once clear. If sea grass was allowed to grow, then I think yes. Galveston bay is shallow, and it has a muddy bottom. A little bit of wind is all it takes to kick-up the silt. Sea grass would keep that from happening. But with all the boat traffic, shrimping, oyster dr...

Re: I want to improve!
I can see how the learning curve for fishing would be difficult for kayakers, because you're basically alone, or at best, a stone's throw away from a partner, and probably not even looking in that direction most of the time. I learned most of what I know about fishing from my friends with boats, and...

I haven't found in black widows at my place yet. But I have plenty of brown recluses, wasps, and in the Fall, asps. I keep my kayaks outside, so the first thing I do when I pull one off the rack is perform a thorough inspection for any hitchhikers.

I can think of three suspects: Tiger, Hammerhead, and Bull. All three are very aggressive and come close enough to reach by kayak. Sounds like a day to remember.

I would be straining to hold that much fish. But an extreme wide angle lens could make the fish appear heavier than it is. A 48" snook might only go forty pounds, so that's probably doable for (me).Endo wrote:Am I the only one that thinks that pic is photo shopped?

Re: Alligator Gar
The best bait I have found for alligator gar is gizzard shad under a cork. Finding gizzard shad big enough to use for bait can be problematic. I catch them by castnet. Mullet and saltwater shad work pretty well. Freshwater (non-gamefish) under a cork will work, such as freshwater drum and bluegill. ...

Re: Kayak fishing- San Luis Pass
Tidal movement is the number one factor in current problems around San Louis Pass. Massive amounts of water funnel in and out through the Pass. It can be a calm day and still have dangerous current. Look at a tide chart. You will see how tides get stronger and weaker throughout the year. This will b...

Re: Tarpon were once considered a trash fish...
Perfect timing for this post. May is a great month for Jackfish along the Upper Texas Coast. There should be quite a few jacks along the beachfront, as well as in and around deepwater channels leading into the bay. Find a school of big menhaden and there's probably a school of jacks nearby. If you'r...

Re: How Come People Don't Like Reds?
It's a curios day that brings up a discussion of like / dislike for redfish. I declare success when I have a slot red in the fish bag. I can catch just about anything else anytime I want. I guess it depends on how populous reds are where you fish. Reds are golden for me.

I've been handling stingrays for years. I unhook stingrays, but I understand why others don't. A mishap would be a major interruption to life. The thing you need to understand about stingrays, they stick you like a scorpion. Not many people know this, but stingrays can arch their backs and stick a p...

You just lean your rod against the railing and loosen your drag so a fish doesn't pull it over. But more importantly for me to say, we have a front coming through Saturday night with high winds. You might want to rethink your boating plans.

I can see why you say a prayer before you go out. That's a wicked setup you got there. You were zipping along under power. How fast are you going under power, if you don't mind saying? Great job on the snappers. A lot of PB'ers don't do that well. I know night fishing off kayaks is discouraged here,...
