Fly fishing newbie questions

Ok, I've made the jump and want to try saltwater fly fishing(redfish/trout/etc). So far I've acquired a rod, reel, fly line. I'm trying to go into this slow to see if I like it before spending a bunch of bucks. Have a number of questions. 1.) Just how important is the leader/tippet? I've been messin...

Thank all of you for your replies. Now I have a few ideas to work with.

I was hoping for a dry ride merely for the comfort factor of not having to wear waders while riding the yak.

Nice looking rig.

Opinions wanted: dry ride kayak/cheap if possible

Got this crazy idea. I'm wanting a kayak that rides dry. Went by Academy and looked at the El-Cheapo sit inside Heritage Angler they sell. Any good? What I'm going to try to do is use my motorboat as a Mother Ship when needed. Otherwise stick to short distance paddles only. There are some places I w...

I've found that 3 rods seems to be the max number of rods I can handle without working myself to death.
If the weed is prevelant then two rods will keep you busy.

You get out there, its warm, you're tired from rising at 4am, you're comfortable, you nod off. No biggie.

I spoke with the work crew about the toll booth. They are going to demo and rebuild the booth.

Use Lime-Away.
Soak them for a couple minutes, then rub them down with your fingers. Wash off with warm water and allow to dry.

I'm probably going to step on a bouncing betty but here goes.......... I think the flounder should be granted gamefish status. I also don't believe it is so much the "shrimpers" that hurt the flounder population as it is the "floundering boats" both commercial and privately operated. Shrimpers have ...

I've done both cheap and expensive. FWIW I ended up using the Costa Del Mar Eliminator's w/ the green mirror lens. Outstanding glasses. Wear them all day w/ little eye fatique. Excellent "in the water" viewing too. I really like the side panels that prevent sunlight from coming in from the side of t...

Like most folks when I started out I packed a lot of gear that ended up not being used. As time went on the culling commenced. As a person gets more familiar with various gear and what it can and can't do they trim down. What I found useful is to determine beforehand what type of fishing you're goin...

The baitcasters I use for light tackle fishing are all Shimanos. Also use spinning reels. There are advantages and disadvantages to both styles. The baitcasters have better balance for repetitive casting and allow you to touch the line easier for the "feel" of a tap or hit. The spinners allow you to...

I use a one piece Onno. Am very happy with it. Storage isn't a problem. Carry the paddle inside the truck in the front passenger seat. Safe and secure. No ferrule to weaken and loosen up. Less expensive too. Feathering the blade is a personal thing. Mine is flat. I went with the larger blades. Plent...

Tit'lum-Tat'lum is a nice place. Be aware that it is quite a paddle to the other end. The other end has three outlets. Launch at the Brite Lite cove, beach by bridge, or SLP park. As you enter the mouth there are two small sloughs that enter along the right bank. A small one maybe 100meters inside t...

I agree it must be a bad batch. Been using PP for over two years now and love the stuff. Use the 20lb on everything(spinners, baitcasters) The sticky coating will go away after use. It then becomes very soft. I prefer to use a leader of florocarbon line. I exclusively use the palomar knot when tying...

Quintana itself is a small community on the east end of a barrier island between Freeport Harbor(east end) and the "new" Brazos river mouth(west end). There are a number of interesting places to try. 1. Under/around the jack up rig in the main harbor channel. You can work the bank back towards the h...

Those flatties can be frustrating in situations like you describe. Sometimes what will work is the itty-bitty teeny Johnson weedless silver spoon. I think it is something like 1/16th oz or maybe lighter. When they're doing the jumping thing they're usually feeding on the small shad. They're only abo...

Shoe on other foot! Near miss.

Something happened to me the other day that badly frightened me and another unknown kayaker. I was out in my motorboat. There's a small narrow gut where I like to fish. The opening is very narrow and congested with grass. Trouble is the place is guarded by a very shallow oyster reef. You have to be ...

Sounds like you've got a case of poison ivy or poison oak. The ivy is very common around these parts. Grows like a vine. Red swollen inflammation at the site is typical. Often the site will erupt into small clear liquid filled blisters after a couple of days. It is important you do not rupture the b...
