I've caught some pretty decently sized croaker in the Lagoon using paddletails.

Cheap reels work. I have a $32 Sougayilang I use for bass fishing and I've been wanting to see how it does inshore. It has 22 lbs of drag. My high end Shimanos only have 11 lbs!

Late to the party but no I do the opposite. It seems pretty easy and I’ve never thought about it but when I use my spinning reels I’m comfortable using a left handed retrieve so it would make sense using a left retrieve baitcaster. Three kayaks ... there at opening 7 AM ... no real fish caught by anyone. Water was very calm, and it was a beautiful day, but there were no material fish caught. 1 rat red, ~ 3 medium croaker, ~ 5 grunts, ~10 small catfish. I used to own a couple of boats. A walleye boat and a fancy, go fast Sea Ray. Never had them out in saltwater. Haulover inlet is no joke.
