Re: Launch Point for North and/or South Deer Island
You can launch from the extreme west end of this road. However, you will need to park your vehicle a 1/4 mile+ down the road to get beyond the no-parking signage. Have a plan B (GISP or Artist Boat). My info is from about 6 months ago so there may have been changes. I would not attempt this on the w...

Re: TX Hill Country - September 11, 2022
Appreciate your report. I often fly fish in the Pedernales river and was shocked to see just a few isolated pools and no flow. This was in early August so hopefully it is improving.

Bastrop Bayou 9-8-2022
Myself and two friends launched from the Clay Banks site at 7:30am. Nice, cooler day with light north wind. At the point right across from the launch I hooked into a small flounder just moments after launching. We basically explored the bayou branch that ran perpendicular to the main bayou. During t...

On a positive note, last Thursday at Christmas Bay (Amigo ln) my friend returned and found his truck had been side swiped in the parking area. The responsible party left a note and actually had insurance.

Re: Sportsman Rd, Galveston
The very end of Sportsman rd has a small area to launch but you need to watch the No Parking zone since cops frequent the area. Not sure of an intermediate place without trespassing. Parking can be very inconvenient and hard to find on the weekend especially. I would have a firm plan B. I would sugg...

Fishing Report San Luis Pass area 6-17-22
This is a cautionary tale mixed with a fishing report. This area is infamous for dangerous currents and we experienced unexpectedly strong tidal currents from the incoming tide on the morning of 6-17-2022. We launched from the County park at around 7am and went north towards Bird Island to ride the ...

Re: Settegast Road Launch - galveston
We launched from there yesterday and fished Dalehite cove and surrounding marshes. We did not catch a lot of fish but I managed to land a PB redfish that was a fun fight. We also caught a few smaller specs and a flounder. It is generally pretty quiet on the weekdays and little powerboat activity.

I drove by two days ago just to check but I did not enter the park. The gate to the bayside of the park is indeed open. The website says all the launch sites are accessible.

Last time we fished that area west of JB, we accessed by launching at Galveston Island State Park. We used the Jenkins Bayou launch area that is nearest to JB. It was a long paddle but doable. I don’t know of any other legal launch sites that are near the area you mentioned.

Re: Fly fishing Galveston
I might suggest the marshes near Bayou Vista launching from Louies Baitcamp ($6 fee). Go south and fish the marshes above and below the railroad bridge (be careful the crossing is too low for rods stored in rod holders). I fly fished this area today and caught two reds on a shrimp pattern. Also got ...

Re: GISP fishing report 10/9/2021
Yes, I dislike those boardwalks. Instead, try the far west launch at Jenkins bayou (photo). Less people know about this. You can drive to the water’s edge, unpack and then move the car to the nearby parking area. There usually is a lot of bait fish action on that side of the park. If the marshes are...

Re: Nucanoe Unlimited Advice on Expectation/Reality
I own the smaller, 11.5’ Nucanoe Flint and have taken it out BTB a few times in Galveston. This was using paddles only. IMHO, I would go with their pivot drive pedal system instead of a motor for the turtle reason already mentioned. Getting a fully loaded kayak out with 1-2 ft surf can be tricky. Be...

Grew up fly fishing s colorado streams. Hopper dropper for plunge pools or any water with some depth or undercut banks. Size 12-14 hopper that floats well and a size 16-20 nymph that is not too weighted. For tenkara, I would still start with a small dry like an Adams irresistible that floats forever...

Re: Looking for Kayak Recommendations (Fly fish Galveston)
Welcome to the forum. I fly fish frequently in the areas you mentioned. The kayak I use is a NuCanoe Flint that was purchased at ACK in Houston. It is just under $1000. Nucanoe also offers the “pivot drive” pedal option that is easily added later without any modifications required. They also have s...

Re: 05/23/2021 Galveston Island State Park
Thanks for the report! I fished there the next day on 5/24 and although it was slow, I did catch a PB flounder of 22” using a small white and green paddletail. However, that was one fish for 4 hours of work. I came across a good sized alligator hunting 1/2 mile offshore which was disturbing, Probabl...

Re: Inflatable Kayak?
How about a folding kayak? I have a Tucktec (checkout on YouTube) that folds smaller than most inflatables. I can put it together in 2 minutes, weighs 28 pounds and it is hard plastic. It paddles surprisingly well and they have improved the seat. Attached photo is mine on the Colorado River just abo...

I am a new guy here and trying to adjust to a new kayak as well as coastal fishing. The TKF community has been a tremendous help for learning this sport and doing it safely. I also greatly appreciate the fishing reports! Galveston Island State Park, Lake Como Launch 5/4/21. Hit the water at 7am duri...
