Re: Henri custom rods

Great post. Getting the right action, rod length, reel seat and cork grips custom fit to you in a lightweight package is quite different from a factory. If you can afford to shell out the cash, I recommend going for it. St. Croix, G.Loomis, Kistler, etc. make outstanding rods, but after fishing cust...

Re: Sportsman road update (not good)

I sure hope that launch works out for the Galveston crowd. We have had had quite a few private road/launch spots closed over the years here in North Padre/Port Aransas due to private development company purchases (liability) and trash/dumping. It is frustrating. I saw a lady chunk a fully loaded dia...

Re: Aransas Pass to Port A September

Great post and nice fish! What brand of breathable waders do you use that are not too hot? A lot of people don’t think about it, but if you have any type of cut or wound, use waders, a really good waterproof bandaid or both. Best!

Re: Dead Man’s Hole

The fishing has been good and should get better over the next month. This is a great time of year for inshore and surf. The road is open for now. Several private roads to good areas have been closed over the years due to trash. I try to pickup what I can. Best of luck!

Dead Man’s Hole

Dead Man’s Hole. Good water clarity. There was an abundance of redfish feeding on finger mullet. A few nice trout. Fishing drop offs and potholes with a slow, double tap, extended pause retrieve. Light colored paddle tails and Zman Kicker Crabz on 1/8 oz weedless. Kept a few for the table. No flound...

Kate’s Hole

Spent a half day at Kate’s Hole, Corpus Christi trying out a new rod and reel setup. Water clarity was pretty good and the wind was out of the South at 10mph. I started out throwing Zman paddle tails with some success. Switched baits to the Kicker Crabz fished 16E13846-15F4-4AB5-8D8C-566E9955EAB9.jp...

Nighthawk Bay - Almost Spooled Twice

In the Nighthawk Bay area, Tuesday, caught and released 4 slot reds and a few under sized. The bite was aggressive on the Zman Shrimp. The Reds looked lean and in need of a meal. About 50-60 yards away, I heard and saw mullet exploding out of the water. I quietly polled the Diablo over and after sev...

Re: Nighthawk Bay

Dandy

Fishing Ned, the fish seem to bite as the bait is falling after a bounce. It’s funny but sometimes they hit a 1/5, 1/6 or a 1/10 jig more agresssively. My thinking is the fall rate after the bounce affects the bite. I could be mistaken which happens all the time.

Agree 100%. I’ve got try the bottom glass minnow. Hadn’t seen that one. The Zman lures are durable.

Nighthawk Bay

On Friday, 4/8/2022, the wind laid down and I paddled out to a familiar spot with some guts and did some wading. Very nice day. The water clarity was great. There’s been a significant bait increase in last two weeks. Half dollar size crabs and mullet were everywhere. The slot reds were sitting in th...

Catching them now in back bays. Ned rigs with plastics. Usually keep one fish over 17” and release anything else. Feeds two people easily.

Re: Fishing the marshes???

Try using a smaller bait on a Ned rig for spooky fish. Z-man 1/5 oz finesse shroomz jig head regular or weedless. Z-man TRD craws in greasy prawn with a dab of procure. Finesse fish slow with lots of pauses. Spooky fish seem to bite smaller baits fished Ned rig slow. Especially on sandy spots and br...

Re: Do redfish generally school with similar-sized redfish?

The bulls seem to keep together. Slots also seem to keep together. You find a lot dispersed in the shallow areas ranging in different sizes. When they’re not biting or spooky, I throw and finesse a Ned rig with a smaller floating bait to sand patches or bring them up out of grass that way.

Re: Seeking info on where to go flounder fishing or gigging in Rockport this October.

For Kayak. Drive over the bridge to Goose Island State Park. There’s a bridge and structures close to a little deeper water called Bartlett pass/Island that hold decent flounder. Also hit some other areas close by. Google earth the location and look for structure, rocks and passes. I live in Corpus ...

Re: How to pick a GREAT rod!

I had the idea to build my own rods as there was something I didn’t like or would change on every rod purchased. That started 10 years ago and 100+ rods and many mistakes later I’ve learned there is no perfect rod to cover every situation. Redfish, trout, flounder, snook… This will get you by. For s...

Catch & Release Trout & Redfish

A pretty good size group of friends and family that live in Corpus and Port O’Connor are practicing catch and release only of trout and redfish for the next two years after seeing the damage caused by the February freeze. (Unless the fish will die-hook). Also I spoke to TPW official and the flounder...

Re: A yes or no Poll

No. Cast and control rod right handed and reel left handed for baitcasters and spinning. I’m right handed and prefer to set hook, control bait action and cast with dominant hand. I never understood why someone would cast and then switch hands. I recently talked a hardcore fishing buddy to switch to ...

Re: Tarpon in Packery?

There were some Tarpon and Snook hanging around last year. There is a particular spot that used to hold Tarpon. I saw quite a few dead Snook and a few dead small Tarpon in the canals in my neighborhood after the February freeze. Nothing big. Have not caught or seen a Tarpon or Snook in the area sinc...

Casio GShock. I’ve been wearing the same one fishing that I acquired in military in 1998. Suunto is great but a handheld GPS makes more sense for beyond time purposes.

Re: Newer to coastal fishing

For starting out I recommend a decent rod and reel combo. Mid-level - Lews or Shimano paired with a StCroix or Waterloo salinity. 30-40 pound braid with mono leader. 1/4oz on paddle tails in light to dark colors. Scent is helpful. Work baits fast and slow. Sometimes fish are lazy and you get a light...
