 Reel Cleaning Tip

Note: I can’t remember where I found this, but if you recognize it as yours, let me know and I’ll give credit. It makes sense to me though.Take care of that expensive fishing equipment.

Reel Magic is a good product for certain applications but, when applied internally in some reels it can cause the greases and oils which protect your gears and other moving parts to break down. Problems that arise are jerky or unsmooth drags and premature wear in your gears and moving parts.

I'm not trashing the product just informing ya'll what we've experienced with any type of so-called " Magic cure all sprays". We suggest no water sprayed directly into reels in fact don't suggest any water at all. Reasons why are that most water is Hard Water which has different chemicals which will have a reaction to the dissimilar metals in the reels, also with our higher than normal salinity level and our high humidity, these things cause a big problem with our newer, smoother, tighter built reels.

Our suggestion is to take a blue shop towel (the ones that are thick that you can find at auto stores or Home Depot) and use Corrosion X and spray some into the towel then wipe the reel down and what you can't get to with the towel use Q-tips and Corrosion X. Take side covers off and pull spool out and clean inside. After this, 1 drop of oil in each ball bearing, oil handle knobs, worm shaft, and push button. This is on bait casting reels.

On spinning reels take spool off and oil shaft, bail pivot arms, and line roller. Then either unscrew handle or unscrew cap and take handle out oiling knob, pivot point on handle, and handle shaft. The area that the handle was pulled out of has either bushings or bearings also oil these areas. Hope this might help you.
